The Soviet Union was brutal, yes, and it would be stupid to handwave and/or whitewash its war crimes and atrocities, but making them exactly what Nazi propaganda portrayed (seriously as a Jewish guy I'm shocked they didn't sneak in a higher officer with a yamulkah and a long hooked nose or a Jewish-sounding name to hint at "Judeo-Bolshevism") was incredibly braindead. Hell looking at it with hindsight I genuinely question not just the research done but the politics of the people who wrote it it's a little too convenient that they ended up creating a carbon copy of the image the Nazis themselves made of the USSR in their propaganda and post-war "memoirs" (Asiatic Hordes, throwing so many men without weapons at positions to make the enemy run out of ammo, killing their own civilians left right and center, NKVD carrying out massacres for no comprehensible reason, "No Step Back" always being carried out consistently, etc.) If this is somehow entirely down to what would probably be some of the shoddiest research in human history, I'll be shocked. The CoH 2 Soviet campaign is also infamous for being utterly absurd and terribly written, in part because of how hard it exaggerates and even makes up Soviet atrocities while leaving the literal Nazis clean as a whistle.
